Bagdogra News: The ambitious project to modernize and expand Bagdogra Airport has hit a snag, with preparations for the inauguration ceremony suspended due to the upcoming elections. Reports suggest that the event, originally budgeted at approximately 37 lakh rupees, was subsequently canceled.
The Lok Sabha elections have put a pause on the progress of the airport's renovation and expansion work. According to administrative sources, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had initially scheduled the ceremony to kick off at the beginning of the year, with construction slated to commence in March. However, subsequent events have necessitated a reassessment of priorities.
Airport officials have been unable to reach Mohammad Arif, the airport's administrator, by phone. While attempts have been made to communicate via text message, no response has been received. Nevertheless, an official from the AAI's regional office confirmed discussions about the Prime Minister's inauguration plans for Bagdogra. However, administrative bottlenecks and timing issues have subsequently led to a postponement.
In anticipation of the Prime Minister's visit in March, the AAI had issued a tender worth approximately 36 lakh 87 thousand rupees for the inauguration event. The tender included arrangements for a dome-shaped tent, a stage, and extensive seating arrangements, as well as catering services. Discussions also involved engaging experienced organizations to facilitate the construction of the venue. However, with the elections looming, progress on the project remains stalled for now.

The first phase of work at Bagdogra Airport is slated to conclude by March 31, 2028. The ongoing phase involves an estimated investment of 950 crores and encompasses the construction of a new terminal and various other infrastructural enhancements. Once this phase concludes in the next two and a half years, additional projects including new guest accommodations, parking systems, and multiple leased hotels will be undertaken around the airport premises.
